Peer Support: Choosing Your Own Path

Helping people believe they can choose their own path.

Peer support isn't about choosing someone's path. It's about helping them believe they can choose their own.

One of the most important lessons I've learned through my own recovery and my work as a New York Certified Peer Specialist is that there is a tremendous difference between helping someone and taking control of their recovery.

As peer specialists, we aren't there to rescue people, make their decisions, or tell them what recovery should look like.

We're there to walk beside them.

Sometimes that means listening without judgment. Sometimes it means sharing our own experiences. Other times, it means sitting with someone who has lost hope and reminding them that their story isn't over.

But here's something I believe we need to remember:

Our success as peer specialists shouldn't be measured by how much someone needs us. It should be measured by how much confidence they develop in themselves.

Recovery is about empowerment, self-determination, dignity, and choice.

Every person deserves the opportunity to discover their own strengths, identify their own goals, and define what a meaningful life looks like to them.

That's the philosophy I want to carry forward through Soul Check and my work in peer support.

We don't need to have all the answers.

Sometimes, we simply need to help people recognize that they already have the ability to find their own.

The goal isn't to become someone's lifeline forever. It's to help them discover the strength to build a life they want to live.

I'd love to hear from other peer specialists and behavioral health professionals:

How do you balance providing support with encouraging independence and self-determination?
