MORE ON SELF-DETERMINATION

Peer Support: Choosing Your Own Path

Peer support isn’t about choosing someone’s path. It’s about helping them believe they can choose their own.

THE SOUL CHECK APPROACH

People deserve to be heard before they are defined.
Supported without losing their voice.
Met with dignity wherever they are.

Soul Check brings lived experience and peer practice into the conversation. For people building a life in recovery, the peers walking beside them, and anyone who believes care should begin with humanity.

PEER SUPPORT / MUTUALITY

Respect Should Go Both Ways

A title does not make someone always right. A diagnosis does not make someone less credible.

Read the reflection

We were often told to respect adults without question. The value underneath that rule—treating people with dignity—is worth keeping. The one-way power structure is not.

Real respect is mutual. It does not require silence, fear, or automatic agreement. In peer support, we honor lived experience and professional knowledge without placing either above the person receiving support.

A title does not make someone always right. A diagnosis does not make someone less credible.

Respect becomes meaningful when everyone at the table is allowed to speak, ask questions, set boundaries, and be heard.

TRUST / ACCOUNTABILITY

Return What You Borrow

Trust grows through small agreements kept over time.

Read the reflection

An unwritten rule in many homes was simple: return what you borrow, and return it in good condition.

The deeper lesson was about trust. Trust is rarely built through one dramatic promise. It grows through small agreements kept over time: making the call, showing up, following through, and being honest when we cannot.

Recovery can require rebuilding trust with family, employers, providers, and ourselves. That rebuilding takes patience. It also takes consistent action.

We do not have to be perfect to be trustworthy. We do have to become honest and dependable.

RECOVERY / AUTHENTICITY

You Represent This Family

We reduce stigma by showing the full humanity of recovery.

Read the reflection

Many of us heard: remember, you represent this family. That message could create pride, but it could also create pressure to hide struggle.

Today I think about representation differently. I represent recovery not by pretending life is perfect, but by being honest about growth, setbacks, responsibility, and hope.

Lived experience is powerful because it is real. It shows that people can struggle and still contribute, lead, learn, and care for others.

We do not reduce stigma by performing perfection. We reduce it by showing the full humanity of recovery.
